Darby is a small, dense borough that a great deal of other people's traffic passes through. Main Street and Chester Pike carry Delaware County across it all day, the housing is older and close together, and parking is a mix of narrow driveways and kerbside. Most households here need the car for everything: there is no subway, and the trolley that ends at the Darby Transportation Center does not go where most people work. A vehicle off the road is a genuine problem rather than an inconvenience.
That is why the phone call matters more than the drive. The residential streets off Main are narrow with mature trees leaning over them, and the older blocks have driveways barely wider than a car.

One: Chester Pike. Stop-start traffic, heavy vehicles and a surface that has been cut open and patched for utilities more times than anyone has counted, and the raised lip at the edge of a patch is what throws stone at the car behind. Two: commuting miles. Darby drivers cover distance on I-95 and the Blue Route, and interstate concrete is where most windshield chips actually come from. Three: the creeks. After high water people find damp inside the car and assume the windshield seal has gone; sometimes it has, more often it is a blocked drain or a door seal, and it is worth having someone tell you which before you buy glass. Four: the trees on the older streets, which drop limbs in summer storms.
The straightforward run is Main Street to Woodland Avenue, north-east into Philadelphia, then south on Island Avenue to Penrose Avenue and over the Platt Bridge. Penrose becomes Passyunk Avenue on the city side; take it to 26th Street, turn north, and Snyder Avenue is a few blocks up with the shop between 26th and 27th. When I-95 is clear the alternative is Island Avenue to I-95 north, off at Broad Street, north on Broad and west at Snyder. Twenty minutes on a good run, half an hour if the bridge or the airport traffic is against you.
