Passyunk Square is a neighbourhood where the car is not the point. People walk to the shops on East Passyunk, walk to the Italian Market, take the Broad Street Line to work, and use the car twice a week for a supermarket run, a trip to family, a weekend out of the city. A car driven twice a week is a car whose windshield goes unexamined for months, and that is most of what reaches us from these blocks: damage that was cheap to fix in October arriving in March as a line across the glass.
The other half is what happens while it sits. The permit blocks around Tasker, Morris and Mifflin fill early and stay full, restaurant evenings put a lot of strangers on the street, and a bag left on a seat is an invitation. Door glass is $200 to $500 fitted, most of it same day, and getting the shards out of the seat rails, the door card and the channel inside the door is part of the job rather than something you spend a Sunday on. Either way, call with the year, make and model and you have a price before you move the car. It does not grow once the car is in the bay.
East Passyunk Avenue cuts diagonally through the square grid, which is what gives the neighbourhood its five-cornered junctions; the one at 11th and Tasker by the Singing Fountain is the best known. Trolley rail is still set into block paving along stretches of Passyunk, and the diagonal forces you to cross that seam at an angle, loading one corner of the car at a time. Ninth Street and the Italian Market stalls narrow the road to a single moving lane for most of the day, with crates, awnings and delivery vans in the mix. Tasker, Morris and Mifflin carry the east-west traffic and Broad Street closes the western side. Parking is permit-heavy and tight, and double-parking is a fact of life rather than an event.

First, the rail and block paving on the Passyunk diagonal. A car crossing those seams twice a day is flexed at the same point over and over, and that is what walks a stable chip out into a crack. Second, break-ins on restaurant nights, when the blocks either side of Passyunk fill with parked cars nobody on the street recognises. Third, delivery traffic around the Ninth Street market and the Passyunk strip: vans reversing into gaps, mirrors catching quarter glass, crates swung against a rear window. Fourth, neglect, which costs more than the other three put together. A car used twice a week can carry a repairable chip for six months, and one January freeze finishes what a pothole started.
Come down 11th, 12th or 13th Street to Snyder Avenue and turn west. Snyder crosses Broad and runs straight out past 20th and 25th, and we are on it between 26th and 27th on the north side. Ten minutes when Broad is behaving. If you are on the Passyunk diagonal already, follow it south-west to Snyder rather than trying to cut across on the smaller streets, which are one-way in alternating directions and will send you round three sides of a block. Coming back afterwards, Snyder takes you the whole way east again without a single awkward junction.
