Tempered glass is heat-treated on purpose so it cannot come apart into long blades. The trade-off is that when it fails it fails all at once, and the pieces go somewhere. Most drop straight down inside the door shell and settle on the bottom of the cavity around the regulator and the lock rods. The rest end up in the door pocket, in the seat belt reel slot, down the gap between the seat and the console, in the defroster vents if it was the back glass, and in the spare wheel well. Vacuuming the seat is the part anyone can do at home. Emptying the door cavity so the new pane is not grinding down over a bed of cubes every time you touch the switch is the part that takes time, and it is why a door glass job is not a fifteen-minute swap.
Once the shell is clean the rest is mechanical rather than adhesive. The interior trim panel comes off, the vapor barrier is peeled back without tearing it, the new pane is fed down into the run channel and clamped to the regulator at the correct height, and the window is cycled all the way up and down before anything goes back together — because a pane set a few millimeters out will bind, drop crooked, or leave a gap at the top that whistles once you are up to speed on the Schuylkill. The vapor barrier is then resealed properly, since that sheet is the only thing keeping rain out of your carpet.
