Packer Park lives on the stadium schedule and so do its cars. On an event day the streets around Broad and Pattison start filling two hours out, the lots empty all at once afterwards, and residents either plan errands around it or stay in. That has a practical consequence for anything with a broken window: the day you can least afford a car that will not lock is the day when moving it anywhere takes three times as long.
The parking here is better than the rest of South Philadelphia. Plenty of houses have a driveway or a garage and the newer developments were built with them, which means fewer overnight break-ins and more vehicles that sit through the week and come out at the weekend. It also means the van can genuinely work at your address, with room beside the car and somewhere dry to stand. Packer Avenue and Pattison Avenue run east-west across the bottom of the city past the stadiums and FDR Park, and Broad Street finishes its run down here at the sports complex. Twentieth Street and Hartranft take local traffic north toward Oregon Avenue. To the east, the ramps for I-95 and the Walt Whitman Bridge climb over the neighbourhood; to the south sits the Navy Yard with its own working traffic. The residential streets in Packer Park are wide by Philadelphia standards, with kerbs, setbacks and driveways rather than nose-to-tail parking. And then there are the acres of open asphalt at the complex, where a car bakes all afternoon in summer and takes the full wind off the river in winter.

First, the lots. A car sits on hot open asphalt for hours, then leaves in a slow queue right behind somebody else's rear tyres, and glass that has gone from scorching to a cold rain will show every flaw it has. Second, the elevated roads. Grit comes off the I-95 and Walt Whitman ramps onto the streets underneath, and the joints on those ramps hammer anything crossing them. Third, event traffic on Packer and Pattison: heavy buses and trucks on the same surface several times a week in season break it up faster than a residential street ever wears. Fourth, winter salt on those wide open roads, which pits glass slowly and turns up later as glare on a wet night.
Broad Street north from Pattison to Snyder Avenue, then west for about a mile, and we are between 26th and 27th. On a game day, do not use Broad at all. Come up 20th Street instead and turn west onto Snyder, or run out Oregon Avenue to 26th and come north. Eight minutes on a quiet Tuesday morning, and you can see the shop from Snyder itself. A driveway, yes, easily. A garage depends on the space: we need to open the door fully and stand alongside the glass, and adhesive wants ventilation and a temperature that is not freezing. If the garage is tight, the driveway in front of it is usually the better spot.
