Whitman is where South Philadelphia meets the interstate and the port. The I-95 viaduct runs along the eastern edge, the Walt Whitman ramps lift off just to the south, and a lot of households here own something that works for a living: a pickup, a van, a car that goes to a job site rather than an office. Two-vehicle households are common in a way they are not west of Broad, and there is more lot and off-street parking, including the shopping plaza near Front and Oregon, one of the few places in South Philly you can put a car in an actual marked space.
That mix produces its own kind of glass damage. A work vehicle that spends the day near loading, demolition or aggregate collects chips nobody notices until the wipers smear them at dusk. A commuter crossing into New Jersey every morning racks up joint after joint of patched concrete. And because a van off the road is a lost day rather than an inconvenience, speed counts for more here than anywhere else we cover. Common windshields are on the shelf and anything unusual is sourced the same day rather than booked for next week. Snyder Avenue's eastern end runs down to Front Street and Columbus Boulevard, and Oregon Avenue does the same thing a few blocks south, feeding the big-box strip along the river. Moyamensing Avenue cuts across the grid on the diagonal between them. Fourth Street and Front Street take the north-south traffic, and above all of it is the I-95 viaduct, with ramps dropping cars into the neighbourhood at speed. The blocks themselves are standard South Philadelphia rowhouse, one-way and parked on both sides, but with more driveways and more back alleys than the neighbourhoods west of Broad, and with the constant background of trucks running to and from the river terminals.

One: aggregate off trucks. Columbus Boulevard and Oregon Avenue carry loaded flatbeds and dumps to the terminals, and stone that leaves a tyre at forty is what stars a windshield without anyone hearing it happen. Two: the expressway approaches. I-95 through here is patched concrete slab and the Walt Whitman ramps add their own joints, so a commuter's chip takes that impact several hundred times a week. Three: lot damage, which people forget about. Cars in the plaza lots off Oregon get stones thrown by other vehicles in the aisles and doors swung into quarter glass. Four: break-ins, real but less dominant than west of Broad, and concentrated on the quieter blocks around and under the ramps.
Snyder Avenue is the whole route. Pick it up wherever you are in Whitman and drive west, across Fourth Street, across Broad, past 20th and 25th, and we are between 26th and 27th on the north side. Ten minutes without traffic, longer if something is on at the stadiums. If you are starting from Oregon Avenue, run north on Fourth or Broad for a few blocks and turn onto Snyder. Coming off I-95, the Broad Street exit leaves you a straight shot: north on Broad, then west at Snyder and keep going.
