Southwest Philadelphia drives. Elmwood, Kingsessing, Paschall and Eastwick are spread out compared with the rowhouse grid across the river, the streets are wider, more houses have a driveway, and the daily distances are longer, out to the airport, along the industrial corridor by the Schuylkill, into Delaware County or up into Center City. More miles means more stone damage, plainly and simply. Most Southwest windshields that reach us were hit on a road, not in a driveway.
It also means a trip to a shop is a real decision rather than a walk round the corner. Fifteen minutes each way is worth making when the price is known before you leave: $60 to $130 for a chip fill, $250 to $450 for a fitted windshield, $200 to $500 for door or back glass, agreed on the phone and not added to while the car is in the bay. If the vehicle is not safe to take over the bridge with the glass as it is, that is exactly what the van is for, and there is generally room to work properly at a Southwest address.
Woodland Avenue and Elmwood Avenue both carry trolley rail set into the roadway, and the strip of surface either side of that rail settles at a different rate to the rest of the road, so there is a step at every crossing. Island Avenue runs south toward the airport with a constant load of trucks on it, and Lindbergh Boulevard skirts the low ground along the creeks out past Eastwick. Penrose Avenue lifts over the Schuylkill on the Platt Bridge and comes down on the South Philadelphia side as Passyunk Avenue. Sixty-fifth and Seventieth Streets take much of the local north-south movement. Cars here are more likely to sit in a driveway or a small lot than nose to tail at a kerb, which changes what happens to them overnight.

One: the Platt Bridge and its approaches. That crossing carries heavy vehicles serving the refinery ground and the airport cargo area, the deck has joints at both ends, and following a loaded truck up it is the most reliable way to collect a windshield chip in this part of the city. Two: in-street trolley rail. Crossing rail at an angle on Woodland or Elmwood loads one wheel at a time, and the drop beside a settled rail sends a jolt straight up through the glass. Three: Island Avenue and the industrial roads, where debris on the surface is normal rather than exceptional. Four: break-ins, and here they land disproportionately on parked work vans, where the tool box in the back is the target and the rear quarter glass is the way in.
Penrose Avenue north-east over the Platt Bridge; it becomes Passyunk Avenue as soon as you are across. Follow Passyunk to 26th Street and turn north, and Snyder Avenue is a few blocks up with the shop on it between 26th and 27th. From Kingsessing the shorter way is east and across the Schuylkill at Grays Ferry Avenue instead, then through Grays Ferry to 26th and south to Snyder.
